Blue Monday/ Blue Jeans and Blue Bruises

You'll never guess where I was Friday night...on the edge of a mosh pit!

See those blue jean clad boys? That's where some of the blue in this week's Blue Monday comes in!

There were some local bands playing in the next town over. My son is acquainted with some of the members of the various bands since they also go to the Open Mic nights at the coffeehouse where my son likes to sing and play his guitar.

Not sure what a mosh pit is? Well, here is a definition from Urban Dictionary.

Mosh Pit - "Getting beat up in a fun way; people that like punk rock music run around in a circle and crash into each other for fun."

Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense to me too. I love how Urban Dictionary actually puts the term into a sentence. I liked this description: "Ohhh man, i got my ear ripped off at the Hatebreed concert last night." Yes, there really is a band by that name.

There is a likelihood for injury in a mosh pit. Here are some examples of black and blue bruises, the second of my blue subjects!

I'm not sure what the injury was here. Was it the painful looking tattoo? That painful looking nipple piercing? Or that mark on his ribcage?

My son knew two of the guys from this band, ShankSpeare. I got this pic from their MySpace Music page. They did a pretty good job!

He also knew one of the Oximoron band members. They were good too. They were the band that got the mosh pit started.

This next band Gale Tempest, was not to my liking. The instrumentals were awesome, but they didn't sing...they screamed and roared.

And this band, Beef, was just plain weird. He kept saying something about a Jerry List. I have no freaking idea whatsoever that meant. Neither did anyone else. Actually, I thought they were singing about a girl with a Cherry Lisp. I had this image in my head of a girl with cherry red lips and a pronounced lisp trying to talk to some guy. That's just the way my mind works sometimes.

I got all these pictures from the bands' MySpace Music pages, so if you are inclined, you can check them out too.

So anyways, why on earth was I at a concert listening to heavy metal and death metal bands?

Because my kids wanted me to come with them.

Could you say No to faces like these?

Yeah, I could too! lol

To be fair, here are a couple cutie pie pics of my sons.

I figure that it won't be too much longer until it is no longer cool to have Mom along. I had really thought it would have already happened. Or maybe they just wanted me to come along because they didn't know the way to the next town or how to find the park where the bands played!

Believe it or not, I actually enjoyed myself. I am an old metal head, so liked most of the music that played. Never mind that I was twice the age of anyone else in the room. I just walked in and asked for a chair for the "old lady" and sat there enjoying it all and crowd watching. Here is a secret: I love to people watch!

You know what is awesome about being so old and out of place? I knew I looked ridiculous there and as such, I didn't have to try to look cool or try to fit in. I was just free to be myself and mind my own business.

So how did I end up next to the mosh pit? I'm not sure, but all of a sudden, my boys stood in front of me, and sure enough, some mosher came flying my way, but my oldest boy shoved him back into the crowd. Whew! I thanked them both and told them they were my heroes for protecting their mom!

So, here is my question for all of you: Would YOU have gone to a metal concert with your kids if they had asked?

Hi, Kady girl...
Funny that we both posted about music this Blue Monday. MY music...a LOT different than this kind of music, tho. And, I remember when my mom first saw Elvis twisting his hips and thought he was a nasty thang!! Haha..
Oh, yeah...I would have gone ANYWHERE my kids wanted me to go...and DID go to several concerts with my daughter.
Ah, Kady...you are a great mom!!
hugs, bj

Hell no, I wouldn't go!!!!!! I've been to one death metal concert, and that was plenty for me! Jimmy's brother was in a band many years ago and we went to see him one night. Nope, never again. I was askeered!

Your younger son has the most amazing eyes. I've never noticed it before. And your older son is the spitting image of you!

I can't believe you went with them. Awwwww... what a good mom! And the perfect way to watch and make sure they're not drinking!

Cherry lisp. LOL

I'm with Justine; no way would I have gone. To each his own. I like bands that are not so wild. However, I admire you for remaining proud of who you are. So many older folks try to act like their children, and end up looking stupid. Thanks for sharing. Happy Blue Monday.

Morning, Kady. The fact that your sons wanted you to come along is a sure sign of the great relationship you have with them. That's an awesome thing! I don't know if I would have gone to a concert with my son - he's 38 now and loved and I mean loved heave metal music. But when he got a new tape (it was tapes back then :) He would always ask me to come and listen to it with him. I actually liked some of it and some of it made me want to scream! But I would sit patiently and listen and afterwards we'd talk about his music. Some of the death stuff I definately didn't like and told him so and there were a few bands I put my foot down on and told him he could not have that music in the house. I found a tape one time of one of the forbidden bands, I just took it and threw it away. He never said a word about it! :)
You're a great mother!
Be a sweetie,

shelia ;)

I love my children with a passion...but I HATE HATE HATE Heavy metal music. My daughter wanted me to go to New York to see her boyfriends band play. They are a heavy metal band. I said I would go...then dreaded it for weeks...and was TICKLED PINK when they cancelled that part of the tour!!!!

I have never heard of a Mosh Pit - until now. I think that it was nice that the boys wanted you to accompany them. They must think that you are one great Mom. Happy Blue Monday.

I think it was great that you went with your sons to the concert...music as it was. It isn't my favourite music and I like all kinds of different types of music depending on my mood. I would have gone with my sons as well if they had asked me to.

I remember my eldest son much like Shelia said was into some music with really yuck language. I didn't think he should be listening to that...anyway one day he had his headphones on and he was singing and he sang some pretty yucky words before he realized he's sant them outloud...he gave me the tape when i asked for it. Like Shelia's son he never said anything more about it.

I'm glad you were safe at that show... :o)

My Dh takes my DD to many many concerts!! He is a former drummer in a metal band....not too many people know that!!!

So whenever a concert comes up that DD wants to go to...we all know who's going to take her. I am content to stay home...LOL

Would you believe.... I was a bandaid?? That I was the girlfriend of many many heavy metal boys and used to dress the part too? LOL My favorite band for years was Guns N Roses. I have been to a lot concerts and a whole lot of bars that my mom would have killed me had she known. Then I grew up and grew out of it, but I have an old wild streak that could come out if it needed too for my kids ;)

Bet you wouldn't have guessed that!

went to see some bands with 16 year old Daugther Eileen , bands were Dark Tranquillity, The Devil Wears Prada, Killswitch Engage. On the way home I realized I have done a hard core Mosh pit in 4 different decades since I count 2010 as the start of a new one. so 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s. I may be old but I am not in the way just yet. Yes that is right I am a guy and will jump into the actual mosh pit if the music is good.
